I've just started using Corel Painter X, and I thought it was time I tried painting something, and moving on from just random mark-making.
I thought copying from a master would be a good way to learn - I can concentrate on learning the tools rather than grappling with my own colours and composition. I just finished an essay featuring Rembrandt, so I have a beautiful book of his work sitting next to me, and one self-portrait appealed to me, so I'm copying a section of it. (I will post the reference along with the final version).
Now, this is just my quickly laying in most of the colours - I haven't payed any attention to the surface quality yet, but I'm going to try to make it look as much like an oil painting as I can. I chose Rembrandt because of his wonderful brushstrokes, completely different to the way I've worked before, and that's what I'll be focusing on.
Also, I realise that all my submissions are very brown. That won't be for much longer.
could have fooled me into thinking it was real oils!
Re the printout... that is so sneaky. What if they want to see the \'oil painting\' that you did? LOL But try it, I don\'t see why not, you DID paint it after all... just not in the traditonal way. I remember I included a digital printout from Painter in my sketchbook for A-level... my teacher didn\'t know what to make of it. hehe
Is it the actual smell of the paints themselves (ie, the oil smell) or the solvents that bother you? if it\'s the latter, I would definitely suggest looking into watersolubles... they\'re awesome. If it\'s the oily smell, then yeah I can see your point. It doesn\'t bother me fortunately... I quite like it XD Watersolubles are just as oily-smelling as the real ones, and the mediums too.
