Hey! :wave:
Am under major stress right now, so I'm just dropping in for a second...
The good bit: One week of art school left, then a three week holiday, then only three more weeks of classes for the year! I think it's because the school's underfunded, so they can't afford to pay the teachers for more weeks.
The bad: You can't imagine how far behind I am in work. I have to do a ridiculous amount of painting, drawing and studying in the next few weeks.

Will be back on dA to catch up on messages and commenting for a couple of days in about a week's time.
Arts will happen sometime... October? November? December? There are still a couple of other projects hanging over my head, and I'm a terribly slow painter. ^^;

Current Projects

Art school: self-portrait project finishing this week, catching up on work, next three weeks after that.
-
Card game project: finishing this week
-
Personal paintings: sketching
-
Art trade with *Losmios: sketching
-
Book: filling plotholes
Prequel novella to warm up before bigger projects: 2000 words so far.

And lo, here are pretty thumbnails! :)

Edit - hiatus
My apologies, but I'm going to have to stay away from dA until around the 24th. I need to prepare to submit everything I've done in every class this year for assessment, and exams are looming. :noes:
I just thought I'd let you know, so you know I'm not ignoring you in the meantime. Well, technically I am... :giggle:
Everytime I open up deviantART, though, it eats away hours - and I can't afford to spare any at this time.
Bye! :heart: :heart:

You know how I've been talking about writing a novel (well, a series actually), for years? I've passed a major milestone tonight.
I can now officially call myself a writer, because I've finally started the draft. :D

I only have five hundred words so far, which I don't expect to make it into my final draft, but it's a start, and I'm no longer just accumulating reams of notes on my computer. It's taken me two and a half years to get to this point, and I expect it to take longer to finish. I'm excited now though. :dance:

What I've been up to lately:

I have exams coming up, and still a couple more commissions left to do on my other account, but I hope to have some new art up eventually. I have so many ideas now, and so little time to do anything justice!

I promise I'll be getting to replying to messages soon... art school's gotten in the way for a while. :blush:
I finished a 36x48 landscape painting recently (haven't been able to take a photo yet though), and for the current project I'm doing a copy of The Polar Sea by Caspar David Friedrich [link] (that was the most appeailng to me from the choices I was given)... it took a whole day to draw the thing out on a 30x40 board. :faint: It's going alright, but i'll be pressed for time. I've just done the background and I'll need to do some underpainting for the mid-ground and foreground. I really need to get my blog going again for these posts so I don't ramble unsuspecting watchers to death. ^^;

Stuck in a rut

Journal Entry: Sat Apr 26, 2008, 8:39 PM
  • Mood: Apprehensive

I know I've been terribly quiet... nothing seems to be working as far as art goes at the moment. I managed to finish off one painting, but none of the newer ones have turned out - I'm not going to post them,they're beyond salvaging. I feel bad about it because I've told people about those paintings, and now I'm letting them down. :hmm:

I can’t help but feel that the art I made was fresher and more interesting a few years ago. My drawing skills are much improved, and I’ve learnt to show the form of shapes better and not put in unnecessary details, but I’ve been forgetting to apply what I know about composition. The result is competent but boring paintings.

I'll be working on trying to improve that, as well as using some brighter colours and higher contrast in future, but for now I need to concentrate on my art school work.

On the plus side, I finally have Photoshop CS3 - a version that’s fully compatible with my computer, so it won’t be running in slow motion any more. I should also be getting Painter X soon. I think I’m going to have to put a couple of commissions on hold until I receive it.

In my moping time, I did build a website. I'd love to be able to use Flash or CSS and put in a nice javascript gallery, but this is something to start off with.
I'm worried about labelling myself as a fantasy artist, because I feel that whenever I pin myself down to one thing I'm throwing away opportunities, but then again, the quality of the equine artists out there is also astounding, and I probably don't have the passion for painting just horses to compete with them. :shrug: A few years ago, certainly, but it's been several years since I've really been around horses regularly - I can't afford it. It annoys me because I see some terrible riders around who don't seem to understand their horses at all, and just get angry at them around without looking for the causes of the problems. Anyway, I ramble...
