Stuck in a rut

Journal Entry: Sat Apr 26, 2008, 8:39 PM
  • Mood: Apprehensive

I know I've been terribly quiet... nothing seems to be working as far as art goes at the moment. I managed to finish off one painting, but none of the newer ones have turned out - I'm not going to post them, they're beyond salvaging. I feel bad about it because I've told people about those paintings, and now I'm letting them down. :hmm:

I can’t help but feel that the art I made was fresher and more interesting a few years ago. My drawing skills are much improved, and I’ve learnt to show the form of shapes better and not put in unnecessary details, but I’ve been forgetting to apply what I know about composition. The result is competent but boring paintings.

I'll be working on trying to improve that, as well as using some brighter colours and higher contrast in future, but for now I need to concentrate on my art school work.

On the plus side, I finally have Photoshop CS3 - a version that’s fully compatible with my computer, so it won’t be running in slow motion any more. I should also be getting Painter X soon. I think I’m going to have to put a couple of commissions on hold until I receive it.

In my moping time, I did build a website. I'd love to be able to use Flash or CSS and put in a nice javascript gallery, but this is something to start off with.
I'm worried about labelling myself as a fantasy artist, because I feel that whenever I pin myself down to one thing I'm throwing away opportunities, but then again, the quality of the equine artists out there is also astounding, and I probably don't have the passion for painting just horses to compete with them. A few years ago, certainly, but it's been several years since I've really been around horses regularly - I can't afford it. It annoys me because I see some terrible riders around who don't seem to understand their horses at all, and just get angry at them around without looking for the causes of the problems. Anyway, I ramble...

I'm also on Flickr.

It's good to hear from you. =) And you've been a busy bee hehe

Nice site, it looks really pretty. Don't worry too much about being bogged down, certainly schoolwork is more important and my commission can be put on the back burner if it was one of the ones giving you problems. Just keep me updated!

It wasn't the problem, there are a couple in line in front of it that were. I shall keep you updated... sorry about that. I've been very slow replying to all my messages. ^^;

i think its fine to label yourself as a fantasy artist, great thing about it is that it has a very wide and varied subject matter and you don’t have to bolt yourself down to just drawing fairy’s and sparkly things :)

And pfft those riders  i hate it that they don’t really want to participate but will because that’s what all their rich friends do  its really unfair!

Sometimes, doing a piece in a totally different style than you are used to working in will help spark a bout of creativity. We can become so completely snowbound in our own style that we forget that the work is supposed to be fresh and exciting.

That being said, there must be downtime to think and dream. Letting the mind wander to hidden vistas where it can recharge and recapture the sense of wonder is paramount to continued growth.

Life has a way of getting in the way of life. Obligations and goals are the reality of living, but make sure you sit awhile, close your eyes, and listen to the rocks grow.

Well...I had a whole long comment typed out that you're probably glad you didn't have to read anyway...

Point is. Don't feel like you're letting us down about the art, I'm happy with whatever you post, don't worry about what you feel that you can't share. =) Color and contrast will be exciting...it will all come, no worries. It's all part of the process.
The website looks great, happy that you have CS3, and painter x should be lovely!

 No worries, :cuddle: take a rest...don't be stressed. I hope you're having fun with school.

You're going to love Painter X me thinks. :D So many possibilities! I am really curious what you'll create with it. I can't wait till you get it!!! :)
